Spark Change Podcast Episode 14: “Finding Our Way”

Watch on

Written by Denise Miller, Firesteel Advocacy Coordinator

We’ve written blogs on it, we’ve talked about it at community meetings, we’ve built a section of our website dedicated to it… Finally, here’s a Spark Change Podcast featuring the StoryCorps “Finding Our Way” project!

In this podcast, Erin and I give background on how this massive storytelling project was conceived and executed, including details about the participant recruiting process and our “listening parties.” We also walk you through the new StoryCorps section of our website, explaining features of the public page’s edited stories, and offering a sneak peek at the raw story archive, which is still under construction but will soon be available for advocacy partners to access.

Resources and websites we mention in the podcast

  • We used Google Sheets to share information in real time with other project managers, and Google Forms to gather input about stories.
  • The format of the “Finding Our Way” stories echoes the presentation on the StoryCorps website.
  • Registration information for the Conference On Ending Homelessness, where we’ll co-present a workshop about this StoryCorps resource and communications strategies, will be up on the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance website March 16.

We want to hear from you

Have you undertaken a big storytelling project? What did you learn? Let us know by leaving a comment below!

At Firesteel, we test a lot of new media tools as we advocate for an end to homelessness. The purpose of the Spark Change Podcast is to share what we’ve learned, and to help other advocates use these tools. Please let us know what you think of Spark Change so far! Your feedback will help shape future episodes.
